The Sharp HT-DV50H Home Cinema: Everything but the popcorn

Experience cinematic quality in the comfort of your own living room with the Sharp home cinema system

London, UK — 29th April, 2008 — Sharp has today introduced the stylish HT-DV50H home cinema system, the latest in its line of groundbreaking home entertainment products. With high power RMS 250W speakers (75W per channel) and a 100W Subwoofer, the HT-DV50H offers sound quality to match its striking appearance.

With the explosion of high-definition technology and advancements in flat screen TVs, the HT-DV50H provides crystal clear sound to complement the clarity of the viewing experience and is the perfect accompaniment to the AQUOS range of LCD TVs.

Supporting the latest Audistry by Dolby, the sound of the HT-DV50H is enhanced with the press of a button, making it richer, bigger and better - and creating a personalised experience for music and movie lovers. Audistry's technology is based on a set of digital audio processing features that are designed to dramatically improve listening enjoyment, including intelligent volume control designed to correct for sudden volume changes in music and movies and a natural bass enhancer for speaker systems.

With HDMI output and DivX enabled technology, the HT-DV50H is capable of reproducing images with stunning quality. No longer does any on screen activity have to be viewed in anything less than high definition. Compatible with DVDs and with a USB port available, the HT-DV50H supports the playback ofJPEG, MP3 and WMA format material

To complement the exceptional image quality, the home cinema system is also fitted with a 5-mode preprogrammed electronic equaliser, capable of adapting to and maximising any genre of sound. The HT-DV50H also comes with two ‘tall boy’ speakers. Adding a level of design sophistication to the sound reproduction capabilities, these speakers are simply stunning.

Complete with an FM stereo digital tuner and a remote control, the HT-DV50H home cinema system offers unparalleled sound quality and is a must for any home cinema enthusiast.

For those looking for an alternative, the predecessor of the HT-DV50H, the HT-DV40H, is still available at outlets up and down the country. Released in 2007, the HT-DV40H offers a superb quality of sound and comes with a pair of satellite speakers. Smaller, and more compact than the tall boy speakers, this is a sounds system to designed to offer the best, even in the smallest of spaces and is available now with a suggested retail price of £299.00.

Pricing and Availability
The Sharp HT-DV50H home cinema system will be available in the UK from the end of April 2008 with a suggested retail price of £399. More information about the HT-DV50H home cinema system is available on the home entertainment section of Sharp’s Web site,
www.sharp.co.uk.

Freesat launch date

The Freesat service from the BBC and ITV is scheduled to launch in "early May" according to their customer service representatives. When pushed for an exact date, they were not forthcoming and stuck to early May as the nearest they could give.

The Freesat satellite service will be the first fully packaged HDTV broadcast available in the UK without any monthly subscription costs. The Hig h Definition (HD) content will be broadcast alongside a range of standard definition channels.

It is currently possible to use a high definition satellite receiver to view a number of HD channels, but until Freesat is launched, free HD channels are likely to remain outside the scope of most viewers.

The Freesat package is set to include a number of broadcast channels, as well as a range of receiver equipment and installation options.

BBC and ITV to launch free satellite HD service

BBC and ITV are set to launch a free satellite service, offering both standard and High Definition (HD) channels this spring.

To receive this new HD service, you will need a satellite dish, HD satellite receiver box, cables and an HD-Ready television.

This will be the first subscription-free service offering the High Definition quality to the UK and promises to cover 98% of households.

Pre-launch details of the equipment costs are a bit sketchy, but expect to pay around £180 for the HD receiver box and £50 for installation. There will also be the option of a standard definition-only receiver box, as well as an HD receiver plus personal recorder system.

The best thing is that there will be no monthly subscription fees to pay - once you have bought and installed the system, there are no ongoing costs. This promises to be a serious rival to the HD channels offered by the bSkyb Sky HD Services that are available via an initial payment for HD equipment and a premium monthly subscription cost.

From the lack of pre-launch promotion on both BBC and ITV, it seems as though there are still a few issues to be resolved, but we expect that the launch will be accompanied by a fanfare of publicity.

One whisper is that a launch date of May the 5th is planned, but the Freesat people are still a bit vague and are still saying that it will be in Spring 2008.

Likewise, availability of the satellite receiver equipment is still a little secretive in the pre-launch phase, with none of the retailers that will provide the HD receivers actually promoting the gear as yet.

It seems that we may have to wait a couple of weeks for the full picture to emerge, but we at hdtvexpert.co.uk expect that when the Freesat service launches, both the BBC and ITV will do everything in their power to make it known to all.

Blu-Ray beats HD-DVD in the format war

In a much-anticipated press release, Toshiba announced today that it is to cease manufacture of HD-DVD players. This means that the Blu-Ray format has emerged triumphant in the war between the two competing high definition disk formats. Let's all be glad that the war has had a swift conclusion and now disks and players can be brought to market without the uncertainty over their long-term viability.

Here is the full press release from Toshiba:

Toshiba Announces Discontinuation of HD DVD Businesses19 February, 2008

Company Remains Focused on Championing Consumer Access to High Definition Content

TOKYO--Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market. Toshiba will continue, however, to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.
HD DVD was developed to offer consumers access at an affordable price to high-quality, high definition content and prepare them for the digital convergence of tomorrow where the fusion of consumer electronics and IT will continue to progress.
"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop," said Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation. "While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality."
Toshiba will continue to lead innovation, in a wide range of technologies that will drive mass market access to high definition content. These include high capacity NAND flash memory, small form factor hard disk drives, next generation CPUs, visual processing, and wireless and encryption technologies. The company expects to make forthcoming announcements around strategic progress in these convergence technologies.
Toshiba will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand.
This decision will not impact on Toshiba's commitment to standard DVD, and the company will continue to market conventional DVD players and recorders. Toshiba intends to continue to contribute to the development of the DVD industry, as a member of the DVD Forum, an international organization with some 200 member companies, committed to the discussion and defining of optimum optical disc formats for the consumer and the related industries.
Toshiba also intends to maintain collaborative relations with the companies who joined with Toshiba in working to build up the HD DVD market, including Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and DreamWorks Animation and major Japanese and European content providers on the entertainment side, as well as leaders in the IT industry, including Microsoft, Intel, and HP. Toshiba will study possible collaboration with these companies for future business opportunities, utilizing the many assets generated through the development of HD DVD.
